Great Ocean Road Peterborough Warrnambool Port Fairy

Bay of Islands is in bottom right hand corner of image. The river in middle of image is Hopkins River and Warrnambool is in the bay to left of the Hopkins River. Logans Beach where Southern Right whales come in to breed (May to September) is located just to right of mouth of Hopkins River. Blue hole is located to left of the Hopkins River mouth. The Warrnambool Harbour is just visible on the headland below Warrnambool. In the upper left hand third of the image is Tower Hill nature reserve. It comprises several crater lakes and is a native animal refuge. Kangeroos, emus and koala are common along with native bird species.A climb to volcanic crater rim affords excellent views along the coast and volcanic plains towards Port Fairy. Port Fairy is located on the far left of image at mouth of Moyne River.

Warrnambool is located approximately 12 kilometres west of the official end of the Great Ocean Road.
Warrnambool is named after a local aboriginal word referring to the cone of Tower Hill extinct volcano.
Warrnambool's natural harbour was used by early sealers and whalers from around 1810. The first settlers arrived in 1840's and the township was surveyed in 1846 with the first Post Office opening in 1849.
Warrnambool was an important port during the gold rush in Victoria in the 1850's.
Warrnambool is home to approximately 30,000 people and has excellent shops, resturants and services. Industry in Warrnambool includes fishing, dairy, meat processing and manufacturing.
Warrnambool is visited by close to one million tourist each year. Southern Right Whales give birth to their young off Logans Beach and can be viewed from July to October from the viewing platform built on the sand dunes. Australian fur seals and fairy penguins can be seen at Warrnambool.
Flag Staff Hill in Warrnambool gives excellent views along the coast and the Flag Staff Hill maritime museum is a must see attraction with it recreation of a working Port.
The Tower Hill Conservation park is located between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. It is located in an extinct volcano with two crater lakes and koalas, emus, kangeroos and numerous water birds can be seen when visiting.
Port Fairy was originally named Belfast after the home town of J Atkinson who purchased land in the town in 1843. After drainage works he subdived the land and built the existing harbour using local volcanic blue stone.A Post Office opened the same year, and the town was renamed to Port Fairy 1887. Port Fairy became one of Australia's largest ports around this time. In 1857 it had a population of approximate 2400 people compared to the population today of approximately 3000.
Port Fairy has a large numbeer of historicly listed houses.
Port Fairy is located on the Moyne River.
The walk along the banks of the Moyne river to the sea gives excellent views along the coast.
There is an historic light house at Port Fairy on Mutton Bird Island and at Warrnambool at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime museum.
